On August 6, 2026, Ta Kung Pao published a front-page feature on the “Center for Heterogeneous Integration and Manufacturing” (CHIP) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, led by Professor Shih-Chi Chen, founder of Astra Optics Limited. The report stated that CHIP has been incorporated into the Hong Kong SAR Government’s InnoHK innovation platform, securing approximately HK$290 million in funding, and is scheduled to officially launch in September this year. The center is tasked with the design and mass production of three-dimensional chips, independently developing key semiconductor equipment, integrating into the broader national semiconductor development strategy, and breaking through the technological stranglehold imposed by Europe and the United States. In an exclusive interview, Professor Chen stated that the center’s goal is to complete the full validation process from laboratory research to pilot-scale production, aiming to achieve industrial collaboration and financing within five years to drive commercialization.
